ABMC 2012                                            'Negotiating a Way Forward: Asia Post Crisis and Post Catastrophe'
Osaka, Japan

This year's Third Annual Asian Business and Management Conference (ABMC) 2012 welcomed 80 delegates from around the world to join in discussion ranging from unconvincing growth in China, anemic economic recovery in Asia, the shrinking of the world economy, and idea exchanges on marching forward.

The plenary session opened with Professor Jerry Platt of Akita International University, where he addressed the very current and expansive topic in his featured speech, '"Big Data" and the Elusive Pursuit of Wisdom'. He was followed by William R and Sue Johnson Endowed Chair of Spatial Economic Analysis and Regional Planning, Professor Johannes Moenius of the University of Redlands with his featured address, "The Geographic Profile of an Economic Crisis". This inspiring presentation clearly and visually showed the spatial distribution of economic activity at the regional, national and global level with up-to-date imagery of the geo-spatial analysis of the housing market in Southern California, which has already won two international research awards.

Dr Bill Totten, founder and CEO of K.K. Ashisuto, Japan's leading independent distributor of packaged computer software for large organizations, brought up very real and immediate issues relating to the Transpacific Partnership, which he argued convincingly against. Totten has written a dozen books and speaks publicly throughout Japan and currently writes a weekly newspaper column addressing economic, social and political issues and many of these were fully incorporated in his address. He emphasized the risks of TPP, agriculture in Japan, political and cultural barriers affecting the Japanese economy, intellectual property rights, and market competitiveness.

Finally, closing the day, Charles Edmond, former stockbroker and investment analyst, and current Honorary Secretary of the Japan Society of Scotland, gave his featured speech on 'The Shareholder Spring and Changes in Ethics in Finance: Comparisons with Asia', which finished with an interactive Q & A.

IAFOR would like to thank conference chairs, Professor Jerry Platt (Akita International University) and Professor William Baber (Kyoto University), and the programme advisers for their continued and committed academic support and guidance, as well as all the participants that attended ABMC 2012. We look forward to expanding and exchanging views and approaches and hope to see you again next year for further inspiring discussion!

ABMC 2011, Osaka, Japan   'Challenges and Opportunities II: Perspectives and Reflection'

ABMC 2011 saw one of the world's greatest economists in his finest form, as Professor Michael Hudson delivered a wide-ranging and powerful keynote that looked at the current financial crisis and the lessons that could be drawn from the unfolding events. Conference chair Dr Jeffrey Sommers of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee gave some historical perspective to recent events as he took us back to reflect on the world economy from the past 5, 50 and 500 years, and French monetary historian Georges Depeyrot of the CNRS/ENS looked at the creation and implementation of the modern Japanese yen.

Jerry Platt, professor emeritus at the San Francisco State University brought things firmly back into the present, chairing a Perspectives and reflections on the state of the global economy panel with Michael Hudson and Jeff Sommers. William Saito, CEO of InTecur and venture capitalist then looked into the future to ponder if the March 11 earthquake would galvanize a new generation of Japanese entrepreneurs, asking if the next Sony might be from Tohoku.

ABMC saw more than 40 presentations in a variety of disciplines related to economics, business and management, and we look forward to 2012 with confidence. IAFOR conferences would not be what they are without the backing of our university partners throughout the world, and the organization would like to thank La Trobe University (Australia), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School, Chulalongkorn University, Sasin School of Business (Thailand), Zagreb University (Croatia), EFMD and the GRLI for their continued support for ABMC. Our thanks go to Associate Dean David Wilkinson of La Trobe, and Professor Don Brash of AUT for assistance in shaping the conference theme and programme.
